Cable knit cardigans got their name from the style of knitting. They are remarkably similar to shawl neck cardigans except that they are often thicker and a lot more texturized with a nicely woven motif. Sometimes this style of cardigan will be called “Aran cardigan” or an “Aran shawl cardigan” because this style of cable knit originated on the Aran Islands in Ireland when Irish fishermen wore this style of wool jumpers.
